HOLA! *special update for brandon, even though he shows up to every meeting anyway*

Sorry I haven't posted in a long time. I forgot for a week and then it became an experiment to see how long it would take for someone to mention it, i.e. actually check the blog and notice that it hasn't been updated. Which no one did. Except Brandon.

So anyway, to keep everyone abreast of what's going on right now, essentially we are decorating easter eggs for our beautiful easter fundraiser thing. We're making them into all kinds of crazy and cute animals, and monsters and things, Snooki was in there somewhere... so it's turning out really cool so far. We've only had one real work day on this, but I'm happy with how things are going. We'll be meeting every Thursday like that until the fundraiser, or we run out of easter eggs or both. Or if there are unforeseen circumstances of course. We have lots of weird and useful materials from left over scraps from the extinct weaving class, poof balls, googly eyes, tisssue paper, paint, and markers to go all out on these eggs, but we could probably use some feathers, glitter, and/or pipe cleaners still. The pipe cleaners would have to be the really fuzzy kind so that the glue will hold them to the egg and they don't fall off. And speaking of glue, if anyone can bring in another hot glue gun, that would be excellent. Also, we'll need some gift bags to put the eggs and candy in.
However, if you have already bought something, you don't need to worry about buying anything else!

Um, another thing. T-shirt test order should be coming, though I'll have to check with Ms. Altman to see if she ordered it yet, because if not, I'll do it myself with my credit card. I know everyone wants to get rolling on that!

Breanna said she looked into the expenses for a Chicago field trip, and depending on the day you buy tickets, it can be as low as $20 per person roundtrip to go there, but then we'd need a bus to transport us around for the day and admission for whatever museums or places we want to go. Our current balance in our account is $500 or so, and the easter fundraiser should bring in about $200 more, but we still need to use that money to buy graduation tassels for all of the seniors and various other unforeseen expenses. So Chicago probably isn't an option unless the people going can put in probably at least $100 of their own money. So the Frederick Meijer gardens are probably still our best bet. It's a huge sculpture park and garden- really beautiful- in Grand Rapids. While we're in Grand Rapids too, we can check out the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts galleries, which is free, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Admission for that is $7.00 for students, or if we go on Friday, $5.00. Scheduling a group tour would probably also lower the price. There are also tons of other galleries in and around Grand Rapids that we could go to, so we wouldn't get bored.

Another thing that Ms. Altman brought up a week or two ago was that there's a charity walk happening at the Detroit Zoo pretty soon and they asked if our NAHS would like to volunteer. Anyone who goes would get free passes to the zoo, and you don't have to be there all day. At least an hour or two volunteering for whatever. It might be selling t-shirts or water or pretty much anything. I'm not sure how many people we can send, but let me know if you are interested (which I'm sure most of you are). Be sure to bring a camera though and take lots of pictures! It's a good opportunity for anyone in photo or drawing to get some real life animal models for your projects. Of course, I'll have more information on it at the next meeting.

Pretty much that's it for the past few weeks.

P.S. We don't have a vice president anymore because Liz says she doesn't care anymore. So you don't have to bother her about coming to meetings or anything. Luckily, we have 6 other officers to turn to, so it's not even a big deal. We even have two floater semi-presidents. Just either way, don't count on Liz being around.

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW BRANDON?

Meeting 13th, 20th 2011

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, it just slipped my mind.
On the 13th we discussed the things we want to do in the next few months, mainly fundraisers so that we can get money for a field trip. One of the ideas we threw around was face painting for Cominghome spirit week.
Well on the 20th, I sent an email out to Mr. Anderson to get his opinion and possibly, approval. I met with him the next day and it's a go! He only said that we wouldn't be able to paint entire faces, just do simple little things, but of course I wasn't expecting to do something crazy. So next meeting, which will be after finals, we'll finish decorating the bulletin board to advertise it and start choosing different designs to paint on faces. Student Activities will probably decide on spirit week themes so we'll be all set. The two weeks after we'll train people to make the designs and sign up for lunches. I'm assuming we'll need a decent amount of people for the lunches so that more than one or two people can get their faces painted at a time. Also, how much does everyone think that we should charge?

On another note, Dani has been organizing the mural committee and things will get rolling on that soon. From what I hear we're just waiting on the teachers to get paint.

The shadow boxes have started to take shape. Dan, Tejas, and Brandon (if I left anyone out, I'm sorry!) have done some good work so far. Right now it's still mostly a plan, but more will be developing soon.

A final note, though it may seem far off still, we need to plan for the Easter egg sale. Specifically, how we will go about making them this year, buying supplies, and organizing days to construct them. We'll have to discuss the kind of candy(ies) to put inside of them too because buying a lot of different kinds was kind of expensive last year, but I'm not sure if we want to be so boring as to only give out jelly beans or something equally as uncool. So start thinking about that kind of stuff.

Oh, p.s. we need to talk about the when-where-how of an induction ceremony now that we have all of our official members in place.

Okey dokey then. See you after finals!
Andrea

(I really need to get that email list published here sometime too)

The Candy Cane Gram Results Are In

So, all in all the fundraiser was a success. As I'm sure many of you noticed, we sold so many on Thursday (the last day) that we ran out of pre-made cards by the end of A lunch and ended up having people decorate them as they wrote them out. We sold about 200 that last day.

What that means is that when it came time to using the funds to buy the art supplies to fill the gift bags, we had enough money to put a pack of crayons, watercolors, and colored pencils in each bag, as well as a coloring book or a pad of paper. We had about $30 left over after this, so that is our overall profit. To whoever leads next year - do this fundraiser again. It profits well. But we weren't really prepared, because we had no idea how many cards we would need. Next year, I would start after Thanksgiving.

Today (12/22/2010), I took them to a shelter on Michigan Avenue called Lutheran Social Services of Michigan. We had originally intended to take them to a shelter in Pontiac, but the day that we were supposed to go, Ms. Altman had to cancel because her furnace broke, and the bags were left with me. And there was no way I was driving to Pontiac on my own. Besides, homeless kids are homeless kids. The ones at the first shelter are no worse off than the ones in the shelter I ended up going to.

So all in all, we made 20 bags, and made at least 20 children have a better Christmas. Thank you to all who donated your time and money, especially Kaitlyn Kmet and her friends, who donated some supplies, and Tejas, Brandon, Dan, Andrea, Dani, Breanna, Robert, Carmen, and Paulina. If there's anyone I'm missing (I don't know who sat at the table during B lunch, for example), you are not forgotten.
